FRANKLIN, Ind. – Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess is alerting the public about recent spam call activity. Last Saturday, June 10, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) received several calls from residents who wanted to check and see if they had a warrant for their arrest.
Many Johnson County citizens have received telephone calls from someone posing as a member of JCSO telling them that they had an active warrant and they needed to turn themselves in at the jail, per Sheriff Burgess. One resident told a deputy that they received a telephone call from an alleged officer telling them they had a warrant for not showing up to jury duty, and that they needed to pay $1000. Another person went and bought a gift card from a local business and also sent money through E-Cash.
The people who make these calls to unsuspecting victims have well-orchestrated scams to make people believe that they are real. These imposters also have the ability to “spoof” telephone numbers so if you were to check the number for accuracy it may appear to be correct.
No one from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office nor any Johnson County Courts will call and ask for funds, bonds, or any type of payment. A legitimate law enforcement agency or court official will never ask for or accept a bond on a warrant without the subject of the warrant being arrested and booked into a county jail. They will never send a courier or meet at your house to pick up cash. Also, any phone apps, gift cards, or Bitcoin/cryptocurrency are never asked for or accepted.
In addition, law enforcement agencies will also never attempt to collect on civil matters. That is done through the court system, in person. For further information visit here.
