PUNE: The Chandannagar police have initiated a probe into a complaint filed by a Kharadi-based businessman, who alleged that he was duped by online fraudsters of Rs23.2 lakh between April 9 and 11.
The businessman, in his complaint, said that he had been duped by promising large returns on his investment in cryptocurrencies.
“The victim received a message on an internet-based text messaging app which claimed it was safe to invest in cryptocurrencies. He was aware of cryptocurrencies and started an online conversation with a stranger, who explained to him about how he would get big returns and asked him to purchase some cryptocurrencies,” sub-inspector Rameshwar Rewale of the Chandannagar police told TOI and added that the victim was promised daily updates about his investment by the fraudster.
According to Rewale, the fraudster then asked the businessman to transfer the money in two banks accounts, after which the former became incommunicado.
The police have contacted both private banks and sought transaction details of the two bank accounts.
Earlier this month, a complaint was filed with the Yerawada police about a Kharadi-based man who cheated 9 people in a similar cryptocurrency scam out of Rs 1.5 crore in total. The fraudster had rented a property for his ‘firm’ an would contact prospective clients on phone, seeking crypto investments by promising to double the investment. He also asked existing investors to spread the word.
Initially, the investors recieved returns, but it soon stopped. Some time later, they were unable to contact him.
There have been a few other cases of cryptocurrency frauds in the city. The police are working towards nabbing the criminals.
