US President Trump said on Monday that the sudden rise of China’s artificial intelligence application DeepSeek “should sound the alarm for American technology companies” and said it is a good thing that Chinese companies have developed cheaper and more efficient artificial intelligence models. Trump believes that the low-cost model is a “very positive development” for the artificial intelligence industry as a whole.
Trump said he still expects U.S. tech companies to dominate the field of artificial intelligence, but he acknowledged the challenge posed by DeepSeek, a low-cost AI assistant that surged to No. 1 on the Apple App Store over the weekend.
“The release of DeepSeek artificial intelligence by a Chinese company should be a wake-up call for our industry and we need to focus on competition,” Trump said.
DeepSeek has become the talk of Silicon Valley, especially after the release of two advanced models, DeepSeek-V3 and DeepSeek-R1, offering performance comparable to OpenAI at a fraction of the cost.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman also applauded DeepSeek R1, saying, “DeepSeek’s R1 is an impressive model, especially since they are able to provide excellent performance at such a price. We will obviously launch better models, and at the same time, it is really exciting to have a new competitor join! We will release some new content.”

Emphasizing on his research roadmap, Altman also added that the world is going to need a lot of AI and will be amazed by the next generation of models.
