a16z Crypto Exec Brian Quintenz Eyed for CFTC Chairman?

Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) crypto policy head Brian Quintenz has apparently been endorsed to lead the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC). This development is especially significant as it could further shape crypto regulatory norms in favor of crypto businesses and policies under the administration of President-elect Donald Trump.

Pro-Crypto Brian Quintenz to be back as CFTC Chairman?

The former Republican CFTC commissioner, Brian Quintenz has been interviewed for the position, according to sources.

Quintenz is currently responsible for policy affairs at a16z Crypto, the digital asset division of venture capital giant Andreessen Horowitz. The a16z website describes Brian as having long stood out as an innovative thinker in crypto and DeFi. Quintenz was also one of the earliest leaders in Washington to recognize the value of crypto. Before his stint at a16z, he was nominated by both Presidents Obama and Trump to serve as commissioner of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), and in August 2017, was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. Under Brian Quintenz, the CFTC oversaw the listing of the first U.S. regulated Bitcoin and Ether futures contracts on derivatives exchanges and the rapid expansion of DeFi.

Crypto Industry Hails Brian for CFTC Chairmanship Role

Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and COO Emilie Choi are already hailing Quintenz’s name for the next CFTC chair set to succeed Rostin Behnam.

The CFTC chairmanship holds significance as it monitors commodity futures and options markets. The CFTC’s mandate is governed by the Commodity Exchange Act (CEA) and focuses on preventing fraud, manipulation, and abusive practices in these markets. The CFTC also asserts its regulatory authority over the spot market for digital assets and helps develop a regulatory framework for the cash digital asset commodity market.

Brian Quintenz’s prospects for CFTC chairmanship could further be good news for the crypto industry, especially as another pro-crypto regulatory official, Paul Atkins is set to take up the SEC Chair position.
