Ethereum’s roadmap explores solutions like FOCIL and multi-proposer schemes to tackle issues like short-term censorship and proposer latency advantages, enhancing blockchain efficiency.

Ethereum, one of the leading blockchain platforms, is navigating critical challenges in its transaction supply chain, which affects the economic efficiency of its ecosystem. According to a16z crypto, the focus is on addressing short-term censorship and proposer latency advantages through innovative solutions like FOCIL and multi-proposer schemes.

Addressing Short-Term Censorship

The current Ethereum model grants single proposers monopoly control over transaction inclusion, which can lead to short-term censorship. This occurs when a proposer, motivated by off-chain incentives, chooses to exclude certain transactions for personal gain. Such actions can degrade the efficiency of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, where transaction timing is critical.

FOCIL, a constrained single proposer architecture, offers a potential solution. It involves inclusion committees that enforce the inclusion of specific transactions, enhancing censorship resistance. By implementing conditional inclusion lists, Ethereum aims to ensure that adversaries find it economically challenging to exclude transactions.

Proposer Latency Advantages

In a single proposer system, proposers are the last to act in the block production game, enabling them to react to new information faster than other participants. This advantage can lead to market inefficiencies, as proposers can submit transactions reflecting a more current state than competing users.

Multi-proposer schemes present a promising alternative by distributing the power among multiple proposers, thereby reducing individual latency advantages. In this setup, multiple validators propose transactions, and the protocol aggregates them into a single block, promoting a fairer competition environment.

The Road Ahead

The choice between FOCIL and multi-proposer schemes depends on Ethereum’s long-term vision. If the focus is on short-term censorship resistance, constrained single proposer designs like FOCIL could be implemented. Alternatively, if addressing market inefficiencies caused by single proposer schemes is a priority, a shift toward multi-proposer architectures might be necessary.

While both solutions are still in development, they represent significant steps toward enhancing Ethereum’s functionality and maintaining its position as a leading blockchain platform. As Ethereum continues to evolve, these innovations will play a crucial role in shaping its future landscape.
