Acclaimed Sega Game Designer Developing Virtua Fighter NFTs

After many voices of discontent from fans of Sega titles, it appears the gaming company will embark on developing its own Virtua Fighter NFTs. However, this endeavor will be undertaken by its former director, Yu Suzuki, even though Sega will own the IP for the project.

This is according to a recent announcement where Suzuki reveals that he has teamed up with OASYX, an NFT firm, to create unique and exciting experiences for both its new and old fans. The collection will comprise 1,000 NFT pieces in total, based on 11 characters that feature in Virtua Fighter’s first 3 titles. According to the team behind the project, the NFTs “will serve as the base for future Metaverse avatars.”

Suzuki co-developed Virtua Fighter back in 1993 using what was then cutting-edge technology of the time. Over the years, the game would gain popularity around the world. Now he hopes to create a deeper connection between the fans and the game through these NFTs.

Virtua Fighter NFTs Will Create New Entertainment For Fans

The director would leave his post at Sega in 2009 but has maintained a healthy relationship with the gaming company. Thus, they found him fit to run the NFT project; after all, the game was his idea. In a statement, he notes, “through my work supervising the development of OASYX’s unique worldview, I am delighted to combine innovative technology in the form of blockchain-based NFTs with three titles from the Virtua Fighter series to create new entertainment for a wide range of gaming fans.”

With this NFT project on the way, Sega is keen to silence recent criticism from fans that feel the company isn’t showing any efforts when it comes to transitioning to Web3. Despite glimpses of interest in NFTs in the past, the company has done little to suggest they plan to integrate them into their games. However, now they seem bent on addressing this persistent issue, much to the delight of their fans.
