Another 8 Filipinos rescued from alleged online job scam in Cambodia

Eight Filipinos who fell victim to online job scammers in Cambodia were rescued and safely returned to the Philippines on Saturday.

According to Jonathan Andal’s GTV News Live report, one victim said they had been offered sales agent or chat support jobs.

However, when they arrived in Cambodia, they were forced to take part in love scams.

If they failed to scam victims, their wages were reduced, and they were threatened with violence.

According to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), there were still 30 Filipinos who needed to be rescued with the help of Cambodian authorities.

DFA Undersecretary Eduardo Jose De Vega said in mid February “I would say there are as many as 50 to 100 [victims] each in Myanmar, Laos, Cambodia,” he said when asked in an interview over ABS-CBN News Channel of how many victims have fallen under the crypto-trafficking scheme.

In January this year, Sen. Risa Hontiveros bared the alleged participation of some Bureau of Immigration (BI) staff in the trafficking of Filipinos in Cambodia who were then forced to work as “crypto scammers” for a Chinese mafia.

Recruiters in Philippines were reportedly  paying around P75,000 to P100,000 to Immigration officers for every Filipino that they allow to exit without question. Gmanetwork.com/Khmer Times
